25 Forest Health Tours in Northeast Oregon
Wallowa on July 25th John Day on July 27th
Contact:
  1. Wallowa: Wednesday, July 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (or earlier)

Where: Meet at the Oregon Department of Forestry Office, Highway 82 in Wallowa, to car pool

Instructors: Dave Shaw, OSU Extension Service Forest Health Specialist and Paul Oester, Extension Forester

Program:

Do you often think about what might be damaging or killing your trees and what you can do about it?  Or, maybe you just want to learn more about forest health.  If so, this will be a great opportunity to learn about a wide variety of forest insects and diseases common to our forests in northeast Oregon.  We’ll focus on diagnosing insect and disease problems and see many examples, including bark beetles, foliage damaging insects and diseases, root rots, tip damaging insects, rusts and more.  We will also assess the underlying causes, discuss management options and available resource materials.

Registration and logistics:

Please call the OSU Extension Service Union County Office to reserve a place (541-963-1010) by Friday, July 20th so we can plan accordingly.  We’ll be doing some light to moderate hiking so wear appropriate boots and plan for inclement weather.  Also, bring your own lunch and water.  We’ll have some extra water available.  We will car pool from the ODF parking lot in Wallowa and our route will follow a loop that will include stops along Smith Mountain Rd, then through the JoAnne and Craig Pubols property (Howard and Muriel Johnson’s estate), then on through some of Forest Capital Partners forestland and east to the Promise Road to Wallowa.

  1. Pine Butterfly Tour---John Day, Friday, July 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (or earlier)

Where: Meet at the Oregon Department of Forestry Office, 415 Patterson Bridge Rd, John Day to car pool

Instructors:

Dave Shaw, Forest Health Specialist, Oregon State University Extension Service, Corvallis

Lia Spiegel, Entomologist, Forest Health Service Center, U.S. Forest Service, La Grande

Rob Flowers, Entomologist, Oregon Department of Forestry, Salem

Steve Fitzgerald, OSU Extension Service, Redmond

Ari DeMarco, OSU Graduate Student, Corvallis

Paul Oester, OSU Extension Service, La Grande

Bob Parker, OSU Extension Service, Baker City

Program:

As many of you may have noticed, during the past few years there has been an increase in the number of pine butterflies fluttering in and around our ponderosa pine forests.  This has been particularly true in parts of Malheur County where the population of butterflies is at outbreak levels and defoliation in some areas is high.  In fact, the area of defoliation in the outbreak area increased about 8 fold from 2010 to 2011.  We are not sure what the population will do in 2012, but this tour is a good opportunity to see the insect and damage and learn more about this defoliator.

On the tour, we’ll visit locations to see insect larvae and feeding habits and discuss the biology, ecology, damage impacts and trends, identification, management alternatives and challenges.  We’ll also be able show you the differences between the pine sawfly and pine butterfly and talk about why this is important.  In addition, we will have the opportunity to talk about a new research project getting underway (Title:  “Tree Mortality and Increased Fuels Following Severe Defoliation by Pine Butterfly in Oregon-Assessing the Aftermath of the 2008-11 Epidemic”).  As you can see, we have an outstanding group of “experts” so there should be plenty of opportunity for discussion.  Plans are to include both federal and private landowner stops.

If you are a woodland owner, logger, contactor or you’re just interested, this informational workshop will help answer many of your questions.

Pre-registration and logistics:

Please call the OSU Extension Service Union County Office to reserve a place (541-963-1010) by Friday, July 20th.  We’ll be doing some light hiking so wear appropriate boots and plan for inclement weather.  Also, bring your own lunch and water.  We’ll have some extra water available.  We will car pool from the ODF parking lot in John Day.  For more information please call either the OSU Extension Office in La Grande (541-963-1010) or Baker City (541-523-6418).

Sponsors: OSU Extension Service, Oregon Department of Forestry and U.S. Forest Service.

Hope you can make one or both of these tours!

 Paul Oester, Extension Forester
