Position Profile: The anticipated length of this position is from March 2010 thru June 2011. This position, under the supervision of a Natural Resource Scientist 3, will perform as scientist for the stewardship science program for aquatic land management activities carried out by the Aquatics program. This position provides technical guidance for the stewardship science program in its efforts to evaluate threats to and enhancement of aquatic resources managed by Washington DNR. The scientist in this position supports the Aquatics program's effort to minimize and mitigate for threats, and plan for sustainable use of aquatic resources.

Entry Level Field Forester

Description: The field forester will plan and implement a wide variety of property management tasks, including timber inventory, management plan preparation, GPS data collection, GIS mapping, timber sale layout and tree marking, timber sale administration, contractor supervision, regeneration planning and weed control, and public outreach. The position will be based out of our Portland office and will require travel throughout northwest Oregon. The field forester will work closely with Trout Mountain Forestry's three partners to become well versed in our approach to forest management.

Successful applicant must have field experience in forest land management, including supervisory and operational responsibilities (not required for entry level; however, job grade level assigned is dependent on qualifications and experience); knowledge of Western forest silvicultural practices, operational costs, log markets, and ability to operate within stringent and complex forest practices regulation arena; skills in effective oral and written communication; use of computer databases, spreadsheets and software (ArcView, ForstView and ArcMap); communicate and work effectively with extrenal contacts; and ability to operate with minimal supervision, in adverse weather conditions, and on steep, uneven terrain.

Position Profile: This position reports to the Deputy Supervisor Uplands and resides in the Executive Management Division.
This position serves as an independent strategic planner and project manager responsible for developing solid working relationships and effective communications and coordination between the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Bonneville Power Administration (BPA). This position is the principle liaison with BPA staff and project managers regarding special projects as well as activities of common interest to the agencies. Primary focus is on finding solutions to complex easement, right of way, valuation and other factors relating to the sitting and potential impacts of BPA corridors on DNR-managed trust lands and advising executive management on BPA corridor issues. This position also administers the Master Agreement and project level agreements with BPA for reimbursable services relating to special projects and activities.

Originate, develop, and conduct formal forestry education programs and in-service training to established and new non-industrial forest landowners in Spokane and Stevens Counties. The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, providing oversight, training and consultation to promote sound, responsible forestry and environmental management. In conjunction with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, this position supports requests for professional assessments related to forest health protection, insect and disease prevention and restoration programs in eastern Washington.
Required: A Bachelor's degree in a relevant extension program discipline and two (2) years of related program experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Relevant extension program disciplines include forest resources, forestry, natural resources management, or other closely related field. Experience teaching and delivering natural resource educational programs and technical assistance to the public. Must have a current WSDA Public Operator Pesticide License at time of hire.
Preferred: M.S. Degree in Forest Resource Management, Forest Ecology, Forest Economics, Natural Resources Science, or other closely related field. Two or more years of related experience and/or training in forest health, forest entomology, fire science and ecology, and/or silviculture. Ability to conduct informal and formal needs assessments. Working knowledge of forest management and the natural resource issues of the rural/urban interface. A strong understanding of the needs and issues facing family and community forestland owners, and the ability to develop programs that empower people and build capacity within those communities. Experience and ability to deliver long-term educational programs and short-term projects using a variety of methodologies and software. Public relations/media experience. Demonstrated competency using various electronic communication methods and equipment.

The Forestry Coordinator will coordinate with other committees and partners as needed, and work with board and staff to promote, educate, assist and provide guidance for program opportunities and events. A bachelor's degree in forestry, natural resources or related field, and two years experience in forest management are required. Experience in community/natural resource education is desired, as is fundraising and an understanding of watershed group dynamics and natural resource partnerships. Natural Resource Technician - 8 seasonal positions

Position Description: Positions will be responsible for conducting a variety of fish, wildlife or forestry work including snag and downed wood assessment and inventory, cavity nesting bird surveys, fish presence/absence surveys, fish tagging, fish populations surveys, amphibian surveys, stream habitat assessment and forestry plot establishment and measurement. Familiarity with scientific sampling devices and protocols for these tasks is highly desirable. Successful candidates will receive training and work either independently or in small teams.
Job conditions are strenuous and require applicants to be in good physical condition and capable of traversing steep forested terrain in all weather conditions with a 35 pound backpack. Map reading skills, ability to interpret aerial photography and orienteering skills will be used on a daily basis. Positions are based out of Olympia, WA but overnight travel will be required. Company vehicles are provided for travel and lodging and meal costs are reimbursed while away from the Olympia base station.
Qualifications: Applicants must have completed a college degree in the biological sciences or other natural resource field or be actively seeking a degree in a natural resource management or scientific discipline. Upper division level students committed to a career track in natural resources are encouraged to apply. Successful applicants will have demonstrated knowledge and appreciation for following rigorous sampling methods and collecting scientific data. Knowledge of fish and wildlife handling procedures, identification of Pacific Northwest native plant and animal species, use of electrofishing equipment and traditional natural resource measurement tools is highly desirable.
