Chapter News Briefs:

 

For 2012 and 2013: The Tillamook Clatsop Chapter meets on the second Monday of the month, October through May and then has a field tour in June.  We do not meet in the summer, July through September.

We usually get together at 5:30 for a social ½ hour before dinner (6-7) then a program from 7 to 8 followed by a short business meeting (8-8:30). 

Our current meeting location is The Lumberyard Grill & Rotisserie located at 264 E 3rd Street in Cannon Beach.

8:30 – 8:45:Meet at the “Divine Grounds Espresso” parking lot across from 7 Dees Nursery on Highway 101, north of Highway 26 Junction.

 

8:45:Leave for Feldenheimer Tract within Ecola State Park, via Tillamook Head Rd. on Campbell Group property.

 Hosted by Craig Leech, Oregon State Parks (one hour).

·         History of acquisition of Ecola/Feldenheimer property.

·         Oregon State Parks & Recreation Dept. Natural Resource planning process.

·         Forest Management technical report & recommendations for restoration projects: thinning over-stocked stand.

 

10:45: Arrive at Hug Point Gate to Stimson Lumber Company ownership in the Onion Peak area,

Hosted by: Tim Shiel, North Unit Manager, Stimson Lumber Co., (1-1/2 hours).

·         Challenge of protecting domestic streams on the coast.  View an older Weyco harvest area & a recent Stimson area.

·         Forest mgt. challenges and possible solutions working with a local community water district (Arch Cape).

·         Observing visual management---a good habitat tree in the wrong location.

·         Operational challenges hauling through a small community.

·         Onion Peak Conservation Easement—working with TNC.

·         Clatsop Spit---unique view from a mystery peak.

·         Site preparation, planting, and silviculture operations on the coast.

 

1:00: Lunch!! Hosted by: OUR Chapter.

 

2:00/2:30: Leave for Oswald West State Park,

Hosted by Craig Leech, Oregon State Parks, & Al Tocchini, (One hour).

·         Windthrow salvage efforts done in 1983-84 (1/4 mile walk)

·         Future PCT & commercial harvest in the park (where & why)

 

3:30 (when done) - Leave for home

Chapter News Briefs:                                                           .                                     Here is the link for the January meeting Power Point, OSU Forestry Extension, in 2013 and Beyond   /media/docs/or/OSU Ext Forestry in 2013 and Beyond.pptx                                                                                                                  Re-Cap of the January Meeting    Mr. Sam Angima, OSU Extension Director from Newport.  His topic was “OSU Forestry Extension in 2013 and Beyond”.  He shared the vision and mission OSU Extension forestry program and the change in funding.  They are moving from an outreach program to an engagement model. 

At the December 2012 Guest Night meeting, Mr. Mark Gustafson, President of Gustafson Logging and his Brother Clay Gustafson spoke to us about the first season of “Axe Men” in 2008, and some of the in’s and out’s of the filming.   It was a great evening enjoyed by all members and their guest.
