The Oregon Society of American Foresters Foundation:
Providing educational opportunities for Oregon students!
Support the goals of the Foundation: to foster forestry education opportunities for Oregon students and to enhance public knowledge about professional forestry. Now more than ever students need financial support to make it through college. Tuition and fees at OSU for the 2011/2012 school year are approximately $7,600.
The OSAF Foundation was conceived by Merle Lowden, prominent OSAF member, to promote forestry education. Established in 1985, over the past several years the foundation has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to over 30 deserving OSU undergraduates.
The Foundation is administered by a Board of Trustees. The 2013 Board of Trustees:
At Large Position 1: Ted Riess
At Large Position 2: Mark Buckbee - Chair
At Large Position 3: Jennifer Beathe
At Large Position 4: George Chesley
OSU Representative: Randy Rosenberger
Position 6: Ron Boldenow, Chair, OSAF
Position 7: Dick Powell, Chair-elect OSAF
In the 2012-13 school year, the Foundation will support one student at OSU College of Forestry. The Foundation was able to fund one full and one partial scholarship in 2011-12.
In 2013, the OSAF Foundation plans to actively pursue fundraising opportunities through annual and planned giving campaigns and a fall golf tournament. The Foundation will also recognize sustained forestry professionalism by honoring SAF Fellows at a spring luncheon, and maintain and build knowledge of the Foundation with SAF members.
Neilson named OSAF Foundation scholarship winner
The Trustees of the Oregon SAF Foundation are pleased to announce the selection of Erik James Neilson as the recipient of the 2013-14 Foundation Scholarship. The $7500 scholarship is the only scholarship being awarded by the Foundation for the 2013-14 school years.
Neilson, 27 will be a senior majoring in Forest Engineering at Oregon State University. He is a 2004 graduate of Astoria High School. After high school he attended college for several years before entering the workforce in the field of civil construction. This included working on post-Hurricane Katrina reconstruction projects in Louisiana, and later in northwest Oregon working highway, bridge, forest roads and wildlife restoration projects. In 2011 he enrolled at OSU in the FE program because it was a good match for his civil construction background and love of the outdoors. Erik has also added a minor in Business and Entrepreneurship. He is currently a member of the Forestry Club, National Forestry Honor Society, and the SAF OSU Student Chapter. Erik is interested in a career that allows him to do design and engineering work, possibly in the emerging areas of biomass energy and small wood harvesting systems.
The OSAF Foundation was established in 1985. The major goal of the Foundation is to fund scholarship(s) for outstanding students in SAF-accredited programs at Oregon universities. For more information about the Foundation and how you can contribute, visit www.forestry.org
