june meeting recap
Our June meeting took place at the Wake Robin Learning Center. It was our closing meeting before the summer "shutdown". The attending members talked mostly about the Portland SAF National Convention and the Forester of the Year Nomination. The Chapter members decided to resume the chapter meetings in the month of November, after the Portland National Convention.
notes from the chair
Dear Fellow Foresters and SAF members,
The Portland SAF National Convention took place October 23-26, and to my understanding and opinion, it was quite successful. The Convention Center and the World Forestry Center were just the right place for this kind of event. Portland is in the heart of timber country and was ready for the convention. Even the weather helped and it was a joy to be able to step out and take a trolley ride downtown for lunch or in between sessions. For the people that stayed in town it must have been even nicer, because the few of us that commuted in and out of town each day was tough not being used to the "slough". For us that live in the woods and for the woods, it was kind of unnerving at times when you were trapped in the middle of it.
I have not heard from the attendees of the field trips that took place on the Saturday (10/26/07) following the Convention sessions, but if the weather was any indication of the success of the field trips, they must have been a good one.
The speakers were the very best that our guild has and can generate. Some of the speakers on the program were Chad Oliver, Hamish Kimmins, Dave Cox, and Laurie A. Wayburn among others.
Professionals and students from all over the country were represented at the convention. The exhibits and job fair were quite busy at all times and I hope that good connections - that will lead to business and jobs - may have developed during that time.
The Science and Technical Program were diverse and well prepared. Just a few changes in the schedule barred it from being perfect. The moderators and speakers were up to the task and the subjects were enlightening and educational for the most part. Sustainability, Carbon Sequestration and Bio-energy were some of the ones I attended and learned more than I bargained for.
This was my first National Convention. I can foresee it will not be the last one, all things considered, and hope that they will only get better. Next year's convention will take place in Reno, Nevada. Can't wait to see if they can outdo a Pacific Northwest SAF Convention!
May the charm of the woods be with you!
Sincerely, César G. Carrión
