greetings from your chair

Welcome to our new Chapter newsletter! It just seemed like a good time to try this. The goal is to inform our North Olympic Chapter SAF members of activities, meetings, and information of interest to us. So maybe a one pager with a few thoughts from your Chair, a calendar of upcoming events, and maybe a member profile each time to help us get to know each other better. Let me know what you think!

I attended the WA/OR leadership conference held in Kelso January 25 and 26. It reminded me how much we have invested in our forestry careers and the need to continue to share that passion with each other and with new foresters entering the field. It was a really charged up conference. There are new requirements regarding certification that each member should be aware of. And if you haven't been to the SAF and Washington State Chapter websites lately, they're worth some internet time. Check them out. I met Zoanne Thomas, our new State Chair who coordinated a great conference, and Lori Rasor from the joint SAF WA/OR office in Portland that publishes the Western Forester. I also picked up a few new SAF membership application packets for new members. They will be available at our March 13 meeting if you know of someone you'd like to invite to join us.

We had a well attended joint meeting with NOTAC (North Olympic Timber Action committee) in January. Al Vaughan and John Viada from the DNR's Olympic Region presented a report on State timber sale activities and projections.

Thanks from all of us to Gordon Gibbs who has served as our chapter chair for the last 3 years. Gordon, we all value your commitment to keeping our Chapter active. Martha Hurd
