Glacier Peak Institute Seed Orchard Project

Earlier this month SAF members partnered with Glacier Peak Institute to take middle school students from Darrington, Washington, for a week of hands-on learning about forestry and natural resources at the Darrington Seed Orchard located on the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.  Students learned about tree growth and the importance of genetics, how climate change can affect forest health, rivers and water pollution, the 10 Essentials for hiking, energy transfers in nature, invasive plants, wildlife and salmon habitat, and practiced using a crosscut saw.  They also helped clear undesired trees from the Orchard and built slash piles to reduce fire risk.  Thanks to the SAF Forester’s Fund and the North Puget Sound Chapter for providing the funding that made this possible!  And thanks to all the other volunteers who helped these kids connect with the Forest in their backyard!
