Washington State Continues Outreach at the Puyallup Fair
For several years the Washington State Society of American Foresters (WSSAF) has worked to reach out to the public about the forestry profession at the Puyallup Fair. The Puyallup Fair, or often now just The Fair, is consistently in the top 15 Fairs in the US. Some years it is in the range of 5th to 8th based upon attendance. In 2009 there were over 1,180,000 people thru the gates over the 17 day run while in 2010 there were over 1,065,000 and in 2011 over 1,059,000. Over the last 3 years, the peak days have been as high as 140,000 thru the gates. Obviously, not all these people will be in the Northwest Outdoors Building where the Washington State Society of American Foresters booth is located, but the crowds are definitely larger than any other fair in the state.
Most exhibitors at The Fair pay a substantial amount, but after many years of working with The Fair and the longtime dedication of many people such as John Bergvall, the building superintendent who is a fellow SAFer, we have been invited back each year without a fee. Others in the building include Wash. State Trappers, Mt. Rainier N.P., Washingtonians for Wildlife, Trout Unlimited, Audubon, Wash. Tacoma Water, Rails to Trails, Stream Team & others. There for a few days will be our very own, National-award-winning, Green River Community College Natural Resources Program
The Green River Student Chapter of the SAF designed and maintained the Biofuels in Washington display used in the past at the Puyallup Fair and currently (June, 2012) they are constructing a new Working Forest exhibit. These displays are used at other venues in the state as well as traveling to a number of SAF National Conventions. As part of the display there are several tree rounds including one that invites interactive participation and provides a good gateway of contact with the public. WSSAF needs volunteers to help staff the booth and provide outreach to the public for our profession. In return for your time, volunteers receive free admission to The Fair. Please contact Bill Horn at [email protected] or at 253-770-0485.
The Puyallup (Western Washington) Fair begins Friday 9/7/412 and runs for seventeen days through Sunday 9/23/12.
